The Muladhara or Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. Its name means support, root or foundation. The Sanskrit Mantra letter in the center of the Chakra is “Lam.” The Root Chakra is our body’s connection to the earth. To it belong the element earth, and the colors red and maroon. It is the primal chakra, and its low position contains the echo of the highest Chakra, the way the innocence of infancy mirrors the highest liberation. The needs felt through the root chakra are the needs that start in infancy. Food, safety, warmth, and simple connection to others. The opening of this chakra is the process of coming to liberation.
