Based on the ever-popular f*&!ing mittens, our Hecate Mittens bring the spirit of the Lady of the Crossroads with you all day while keeping your fingers warm and dry! Sized to fit most adult hands, these mittens can be custom ordered in any color combination you like…even some gradients and stripes if you’re looking for something a little more stealthy or flashy.

Unless otherwise specified, yarns are primarily wool blends.

Medium size mittens are 9.5″ long from wrist to tip and 8″ around the fingers, and will fit most adult hands (about a women’s M/L). Size small will fit younger children, and size large will fit large adult hands (11.5″ long by 9″ around).

Select from available in-stock color combinations and sizes, or select “Custom” and tell us at in the “Order Notes” box at check-out what colors you want. You can choose any colors of yarn from this page for sizes Small and Medium, or this page for size Large, or you can tell us what you’re thinking of and we’ll pick the best coordinating colors in our stock.

Not sure what kind of fiber to get?

  • Wool: This is the workhorse of winter knitting. It is extremely warm, and is also water-resistant, keeping your hands warm even when covered with snow. The downside of straight wool is that it must be hand-washed; it will felt and shrink if washed in a machine.
  • Superwash Wool: This fiber blends the warmth and some of the water-repellant features of wool with the machine-washable and wear-resistant characteristics of fiber, creating washable mittens in bright colors that can last for several seasons.
  • Alpaca: Made from llama fur, alpaca yarn is extremely soft, and like wool it is warm and water-resistant. Also like wool, it must be hand-washed. However, for some people who are allergic to wool, alpaca can sometimes be an option that won’t cause problems.
  • Acrylic: This is a hypoallergenic, machine-washable yarn, but it may not be as warm as the animal fibers.
  • Cotton: We honestly don’t recommend cotton because it doesn’t have the right properties to serve as good winter wear. We include it as an option solely due to customer requests. Mittens made from cotton may stretch over time, becoming loose and saggy, and will get wet in the snow.

Please note: Custom orders can take up to two weeks to ship.

Why pay $50 for a pair of mittens?

  • Believe it or not, these mittens will keep your hands warmer than virtually anything you can buy in the store, and will last for 2-4 seasons. Solinox began researching pre-modern techniques for dealing with winter when moving to Michigan from Texas back in 2003, and has not bought a manufactured mitten for the family since then. These are the mittens you’ve been looking for!
  • The yarn for each pair of mittens runs from $6 up to $15/pair for alpaca yarn.
  • Each pair of mittens takes a minimum of 8 hours of knitting time, with Solinox at her competition-winning speed of 60 stitches/minute. How much is your time worth?
