The Rune of the shield is not only the Rune of self defense. It is also a sign of the urge to protect others. He or she who holds the shield takes on the natural place of defending those around them from harm. It is also a sign of psychic protection and defense, both for one’s self and for one’s home and family. More than this, it also invokes the protection of the gods, and it’s been said that they reward the way a person uses this protection. The highest form of protection, and the form the gods dispense most easily is the protection a person needs while walking the spiritual path. The Rune of the shield invokes the protection we need to become more truly who we are. It is also said to grant physical protection to those who choose to be warriors. While this includes soldiers, police, and others who “live by the sword,” it also applies to firefighters, rescue workers, and to those who work for social change.
